About This Spot

Stepping into Phuong Nam Restaurant feels like entering a quiet corner of Vietnam tucked away in Garland’s unassuming shopping center. The pace here is unhurried, inviting guests to settle in and savor the moment as much as the food. It’s not a place of flashy décor or raucous crowds, but rather a genuine neighborhood retreat where the focus is on comfort, familiar flavors, and the simple joy of sharing a meal.

The atmosphere carries a gentle warmth—soft conversations, the occasional clink of bowls and chopsticks, and servers who move with a quiet attentiveness. This spot invites you to slow down, explore the layers of traditional Vietnamese cooking, and find delight in the details: the aroma of a rich broth simmering, the bite of fresh herbs, or the balance of spice and subtle herbs in a steaming bowl. It’s the kind of place where the table soon fills with an assortment of vibrant dishes — from delicate spring rolls to the satisfying depth of Bun Bo Hue or a fragrant herbal tea — each evoking the culinary rhythms of home.

The real charm of Phuong Nam lies in its honest approach to Vietnamese cuisine. Diners can discover a thoughtful variety of dishes that showcase regional specialties and homestyle classics, all prepared with care rather than flair. The experience feels less about spectacle and more about the connection between food, tradition, and those gathered around the table. Whether it’s a quiet weekday lunch or a casual dinner with friends, the space encourages genuine moments of shared enjoyment.

While the location may be low-key and tucked away from the main bustle, the genuine Vietnamese flavors and friendly atmosphere have created their own small but loyal following. It’s a spot for those who appreciate the authenticity of a well-made meal, complemented by service that feels more like welcoming you into a friend's kitchen than just serving a customer.

I enjoyed my Bún bò Huế. The broth did lack some flavor, but it didn't bother me too much since there were various items to add to the soup. I loved how I was given separate plates of chopped-up chili peppers, sliced Chả (pork roll), and Mắm Ruốc (shrimp paste). I love how they already had chili oil on the table, so I didn't have to ask like most places I've been to. I'd give my meal a 4.5/5. If the broth had a bit of flavor, then it would be been a solid 5. My wife ordered Cơm Đặc Biệt Phương Nam. She said that it did come with all 7 items as it said, but the portions were equivalent to what would be paid less elsewhere. She let me know that for the same price, she would've gotten a more generous portion at a different restaurant. The flavor was there though, so she gives it a 4/5. She recommends only ordering this particular dish if you're craving it, but your money is better spent on the noodle soups here. Overall experience was a 4/5. Customer service was great. Waiter was very attentive to our table. I would definitely recommend this place. First place to offer more sides to the Bún bò Huế. I had fun with my dish.

Nice, authentic Vietnamese food for good pricing with good portions. We got: grilled pork broken rice, grilled pork vermicelli, and bun bo hue. The bun bo hue was spicy, deep flavored broth with pork blood cubes which some places aren't giving anymore. The grilled pork for the vermicelli and broken rice was made well, not too hard and seasoned nicely. The egg roll was crispy but I wouldn't say it's the best I've had. Great place to come back for bun bo hue which they're definitely much more well known for.

Great spot for yummy Vietnamese food. It’s located in a low profile shopping center but worth the visit. If they bring out the simple menu, ask for the longer one. It’s where the hot pots are listed. Luckily I was with my Vietnamese friend who knew the ropes. We ordered the seafood hotpot which had the most insanely flavorful broth. We also had the fish hotpot which was so so yummy. The garlic veggies were fantastic. My girls enjoyed their grilled pork. And my friend’s husband enjoyed his meatball pho. Everything we had was super delicious and I can’t wait to come back. Service was on the inefficient side for sure. But I’m not rating down because the food was that good. It’s also very accessible. Plenty of room to move around and no stairs or awkward entrances.

Would highly recommend. Delicious food. I got the bun bo hue and it was delicious. The server was also very friendly. I loved it here.

People recommended me to come here for the bun Bo hue (spicy beef noodle soup) . But I found it kind of bland and not enough lemon grass in there to give that burst of flavors . It was just another average place to me and so far Houston still has the best Bbh .

This place is absolutely delicious. Their veal salad and Thai sweet and sour hot pot are so good . 1. The veal meat is super flavorful plus the sweetness of meat, herbs and sourness of lemon. Their sauce is on point, balance so well with the fish. You put a little meat on the cracker and put some sauce on top. Viola! You will get the most authentic delicious Vietnamese appetizers. So delicious 2. Thai sweet and sour hot pot is flavorful, you can taste the fresh ingredients with the amazing broth. Their broth is so good and smell amazing. The restaurant is not as nice, but it has one of the. Most delicious authentic Vietnamese dishes that I have ever had here in U.S. Their BBH, grilled meat with broken rice and Bún mắm are known well here as well. Be brave and walk into the restaurant, it will impress you

I ordered grilled meat with broken rice here and honestly, it was amazing, but what really stood out was the hospitality. The young guy who served me was super friendly and cool. He actually checked in to make sure the food was good, which I really appreciated. A lot of places just serve your food and walk away, but this local Vietnamese restaurant made me feel genuinely welcomed. The food was great, but the service is what makes it even better. That kind of hospitality means a lot to me, and it’s the reason I’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend!

Their bun bo Hue is really good. The smell and the tasty is 95% like bun bo Hue I’ve had in Vietnam. I have tried bun bo Hue in some other places (Pho Tay Do, Pho An) but Phuong Nam is the only place that has pork blood in their bun bo Hue. They also have shrimp paste (mam tom) and red pepper flakes (sate). Goi cuon is good too! The portion is big. I was super full after finishing the whole bowl. I am not sure if they put a lot of MSG, but I was very thirsty and my throat was a little dry right after.
